Herkimer Home: A Historical place for unique people

The Herkimer Home is a historical place located in Mohawk, New York. It is the burial site of many famous people, including three U.S. presidents, a vice president, and numerous other politicians, military leaders, and celebrities. The Herkimer Home is also the final resting place for many of the original Native Americans who lived in the Mohawk Valley. The Herkimer Home was founded in 1764 by German immigrant Johannes Herkimer. Herkimer was a successful farmer and businessman who quickly rose to prominence in the Mohawk Valley. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1769 and served as a Continental Army colonel during the Revolutionary War. Herkimer was also a close friend of George Washington and hosted the future president at his farm on several occasions. Information can be found here.

After the war, Herkimer returned to his farm and became an active politician. In 1791, he was elected as the first mayor of Mohawk, and he served in that position until he died in 1795. Herkimer was buried in the family cemetery on his farm, which is now the Herkimer Home. The cemetery is still open to the public, and the Herkimer Home is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mohawk Valley. The Herkimer Home became a popular tourist destination in the 19th century, and many famous people visited the cemetery. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Chester A. Arthur visited the Herkimer Home, as did Vice President Elbridge Gerry. Numerous other politicians, military leaders, and celebrities also made the pilgrimage to Mohawk to pay their respects to Herkimer. Today, the Herkimer Home is a historical site and museum.
